Easily accessible winter hikes in the Höga Kusten

Snowy mountains and forests right along the ocean combined with many winter activities - It doesn’t get much more special than that. Winter is completely different from the other seasons in the Höga Kusten, because the accessibility is just different. So let me help you to enjoy it to the fullest without getting stuck in snow or ice.

This blogpost will focus on hiking trails which are (mostly) accessible even in winter without any special gear. I extra added the mostly, because the conditions can vary depending on fresh snowfalls etc. If it snowed recently (and it can snow quite a lot in a short amount of time here) the trails will often not be prepped as fast again. Skuleberget

Skuleberget is the place to be in winter and has several things to offer in the winter season.

FriluftsByn is the main point in the winter. You can start hiking södra bergstigen from there, which is the only accessible trail without gear in the winter, and enjoy the stunning views.

You can also get to these views with the chair lift, which is going also in winter again since 2025. With the lift going, they also opened up the ski slope again. So instead of hiking down, why not take the skis or snowboard.

There is also a 2,5km long track made on the frozen lake beside FriluftsByn for ice skating and you have several cross country ski tracks around.

You can have lunch or fika in the restaurant at FriluftsByn or enjoy some food in the cabin on top of Skuleberget.

Fälleberget

Fälleberget lays in Härnösand and one of the many trails there gets prepped in winter, so you can walk the round to Fällestugan and back. It leads you through a beautiful snowy forest to the stuga with views over the ocean. Make a BBQ there or even buy some snacks on the weekends.

You can also explore the other trails around which give you some gorgeous views over the surrounding landscapes. These trails are not prepped, but they are sometimes well walked by people with snowshoes, so you might be able to follow those as well. If you have snowshoes or skis, you can freely explore all trails.

Please be aware that the drive to the parking of the trail start is relatively steep and tight. I don't recommend driving up with any sort of camper vehicle (even not with vans).

Valkallen

I have mentioned this hike before and the views are just as great in the winter. There is a snowmobile trail going up on the backside of the mountain, so just follow the tracks and you can come up quite easily. You can also take the usual hiking path, but it is much harder.

The cabin on top has a wood stove inside, which makes it also usable in winter. There are also several grillspots to make a warming fire and barbecue outside. Usually you can find some firewood on the top.

Norra Berget

Norra Berget is a beautiful open air museum that brings you back into olden days. It lays in Sundsvall and is not officially in the Höga Kusten. But it has several beautiful trails in the forest surrounding the museum, which are usually well walkable without any gear. Most paths just get used a good amount that they are walkable, but some paths also get prepped with a snowmobile.

The museum itself looks very cute in winter with all the old school houses and the cozy Cafés there are also open. I absolutely recommend going there, when the christmas market is open, which is only one weekend though.
